He’s the longest serving legislator in state history and also filled in as governor after the resignation of Jim McGreevey in 2004.

Now it will be up to the Essex County Democratic Committee to pick who will run in November for the seat. The committee is made up of elected officials and grassroots district leaders from across the county, but it does not hold conventions or open votes. Instead, the decision will be made by the committee’s leadership.

Assemblyman John McKeon, D-Madison, has been Codey’s running mate in their shared district for 22 years and“Governor Codey's contributions, integrity, and profound commitment to the betterment of New Jersey stand as a beacon of inspiration for all future public servants,” McKeon said in a press release on Monday. “His unwavering dedication to our great state, spanning half a century, is a testament to his passion.
