Ireland's four Autumn Series games will give Caelan Doris the chance to lay down a marker for the Lions captaincy next summer - with Johnny Sexton along to help out
From imposter syndrome to Ireland's main man - Caelan Doris is taking his ascent to the captaincy of his country in his stride.
It has been a monumental few months for Doris, who captained Ireland when Peter O'Mahony was named on the bench for the second of the summer tour games in South Africa, when the visitors produced a big response to their first Test loss and tied the series with the world champions. If Doris gets this right over the coming weeks then he could be Farrell's choice to lead the British and Irish Lions in Australia next summer. He may already be at the top of the head coach's list.
“We have a special group of players and I am confident that there are bright days to come as we build up for four huge Tests at Aviva Stadium." "While some of the players have been sidelined of late, collectively they are making positive strides on the injury front and we are hopeful that they will come into the selection frame over the course of the coming weeks as they ramp up their respective rehab programmes," said Farrell.
Two others involved with Emerging Ireland earlier this month - tour skipper Alex Kendellen and Gus McCarthy, along with Thomas Clarkson, Shayne Bolton and Jack Boyle - are named in a training panel to gain experience in the environment.
