Apple introduces the latest iPad mini with the powerful A17 Pro chip, offering enhanced performance and power efficiency. The chip features a unique configuration with five GPU cores, compared to the six found in iPhones.
Apple has officially announced the new iPad mini, which will be powered by the A17 Pro chipset. This is the same 3nm SoC that powers the iPhone 15 Pro series, but with a key difference: the GPU core count. While the A17 Pro in iPhones boasts six GPU cores, the one in the new iPad mini has five. \There are a couple of reasons why Apple might have made this decision. One possibility is chip-binning, where slightly defective chips are repurposed for less demanding devices.
Another reason could be cost savings, as producing a 5-core GPU variant would likely be cheaper than the 6-core version.\Despite the difference in GPU cores, the A17 Pro in the iPad mini still delivers a significant performance boost over the A15 Bionic chip found in the previous generation. It features a 6-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, resulting in a 30 percent increase in CPU performance
