Ikea's city concept will look nothing like its suburban outlets.
After much anticipation, and delay, the Ikea mall in downtown San Francisco is scheduled to open this spring, the company told SFGATE on Thursday.
"We look forward to opening IKEA San Francisco in late Spring 2023," a spokesperson for the Swedish ready-to-assemble furniture giant said over email."We are confident that we will meet the needs of San Franciscans with Ikea San Francisco and Market Street more broadly — reaching more customers and making IKEA more accessible."
The 945 Market store and mall will not look like the vast, mazy floor plans customers are used to finding on a trip to the company's suburban big-box outlets. Ikea's city vision, developed by its sister company Ingka Centres, is named Livat, meaning"lively gathering" in Swedish, and will feature a multistory mall structure, pop-ups, various non-meatball food options, meeting spaces and no cars. A London Livat branchThe mid-Market store has been a long time coming. The vacant shopping center at 945 Market, previously named"6x6," hasn't seen a customer in over seven years.
After an initial 2021 opening date was delayed, the company told SFGATE in February 2022 that it was in the process of"making significant improvements to the building."
