It's the new Honda Civic Type R! It might look more sober than the last one, but it sounds like it'll still be a hoot to drive
, so that’ll be that. There are still some Type R details to be seen, including a new racier bodykit wrapped around a car that sits lower with a wider footprint thatn the conventional hatch., there’s still a triple-pipe central exhaust and rear wing set on aluminium diecast mounts. As well as Honda’s traditional Championship White paintwork, the new Type R will be available in red, blue, black and grey.
Inside, the Civic’s interior has been given some flashes of red, including bright red sports seats as well as a metal gearknob that’ll be ravaged by jewellery after the first few thousand miles. Honda says there’s a new LogR data logger on board that pairs with your phone that includes a lap timer and shows various car metrics on board.And this is where Honda has been frustratingly vague. The brand says this new generation ‘builds on the award-winning basis of its predecessor’s famed engine’, meaning it still uses a 2.0-litre turbo making at least 316bhp.
Even so, we’re expecting modest increases in power due to the revisions the engine. Honda says a new, more efficient turbo has been applied that has a revised turbine with more blades inside boosts power, for example. There’s a new exhaust system that Honda says improves the car’s power to weight ratio, too.
It still uses a six-speed manual gearbox with rev-matching, which we’re hoping will be as tactile as the last one, and chunky Brembo brakes will ensure it stops on aa dime. There are Comfort, Sport and +R modes to choose from, as well as a new Individual drive mode that allows you to tailor certain parameters to your liking.We’ll inevitably find out more specification details soon. Honda says the new Type R will gon on sale in 2023.
