The proposed venue is part of multi-million dollar plan to create a major theatre hub district for the city.

An intimate theatre, in the Berlin-style, is to be created from the vast backstage of Sydney Lyric Theatre.

Now, the owner of the Lyric, Foundation Theatres, has submitted $10 million plans with the City of Sydney to convert the underutilised space into a performance venue for cabaret, plays, musicals and live music, in the manner of a Berlin-style experimental theatre house. “This additional venue will provide a new performance space of a size that is in critical demand in Sydney, particularly for emerging works and performers seeking to showcase performances to Sydney audiences,” Foundation Theatres’ chief executive Graeme Kearns said.

The sister theatres will share a double insulated acoustic wall installed behind the Lyric’s main stage to prevent noise leakage. That can be retracted to allow for the load in and out of main stage productions. Programming for the new theatre will work around these truck movements and not impede the operations of Sydney Lyric in any way, says Kearns.

“This space has roughly the capacity of 600, and it’s exciting because venues of this scale are fantastic for mid-scale productions, and, with a rough stripped-back feel, it means it will suit a broad range of theatrical productions. Not every work needs a high-gloss environment.”Leading theatre producer John Frost said Sydney’s theatre scene would benefit from commercial theatre offerings of the size and capability being planned.
