While the fly-in, fly-out structure is not ideal, a support service boss says it will help in a remote region where recruiting expert staff has been difficult.
A new fly-in-fly-out women's legal service will be launched in Western Australia to help address soaring domestic and family violence rates that have reached an all-time high.The need for victim support has increased as domestic violence rates have risenDomestic and family assaults in the resource-rich Pilbara region have increased more than 200 per cent over 10 years, from 610 reported incidents in 2012 to 1,963 in 2022.
But the Women's Legal Service WA hopes its new initiative — flying in a lawyer and social worker on a regular basis — will help by servicing up to 200 clients a year. It will work alongside existing women's support services in Port and South Hedland, Karratha and Newman.WLSWA chief executive Jennie Gray said domestic violence was a significant problem in the Pilbara and the new service would help women with complex legal needs where local services did not have capacity.
"It is a FIFO model, because like other agencies, we also couldn't recruit locally and we didn't have the housing to support those workers," she said.
