Kane County officials believe a recent national designation will help make the Fox River an even bigger asset to the Fox Valley.
The Fabulous Fox Water Trail! has been designated by the National Park Service as a National Recreational Trail, one of just nine across the country selected in 2023.The water trail involves the Fox River from the headwaters in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, to the southern border of Kendall County, officials said. At 158 miles and with over 70 access points, the water trail offers paddlers the opportunity to explore various Midwest communities and landscapes along the Fox River.
According to the release, the federal designation “was established through the National Trails System Act of 1968 to make it federal policy to recognize and promote and increase access to outdoor recreation.” “We have a group of stakeholders along the Fox River who meet annually for a summit both in Wisconsin and Illinois and we learned about this from a person who worked for the National Park Service,” said Kane County Development Department Executive Planner Karen Miller, who said officials “have been working on this application since about 2016. It’s a very complicated application.”
“We have to show we are continuing best-management and we have been working with dozens and dozens of partners and stakeholders since 2016 to get their support and to learn about all the great things they have been doing along the Fox River to promote recreation on it,” she said.
