“Maya: The Exhibition” debuted at the California Science Center on Sunday, April 2, and will remain on display through January.
A new, immersive exhibit has arrived at the California Science Center — and it explores an ancient, bygone civilization.

A wall of the “Maya: The Exhibition” showcased a replica of the wall paintings of San Bartolo, late pre-classic wall paitings that provide an insight into the Maya ideas of creation of the universe. Jeffrey Rudolph, President and CEO of California Science Center, in front of the entrance to the new exhibit at the science center titled “Maya: The Exhibition.” “There’s been many Maya exhibitions but this one in particular, I think, is one of the best,” said Diane Perlov, senior vice president of exhibits at the California Science Center. “The quality of the artifacts is unsurpassed, they’re really beautiful.
Guests can walk through a tunnel that evokes a sense of those temple pyramids, which were a central part of public life, where rituals took place and where the king would be buried, Perlov said. “I think what is important to see and understand is the Maya have a world culture, which compares in every way with ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia, some big cultures of the past,” Grube said. “But at the same time, what is different is that Maya culture is alive to a certain degree and survives until today.”
