New data shows a staggering connection between unhoused folks and crime involvement -- whether as the victims or the perpetrators. Now, the DA has released a new three-tiered plan to combat this by reducing the amount of people living on the street.

KEARNY MESA – The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office announced a strategy Monday to prevent the homeless from being involved with crime, following the release of data showing homeless people in the county were more likely to be both crime victims and perpetrators.

Recidivism rates were also high for homeless individuals during the two-year period examined, with 83% of homeless defendants having two to four new cases filed against them by local prosecutors, and 15% having five to nine new cases filed. — The development of a Homeless Enhanced Legal Program aimed at addressing the legal issues of those experiencing chronic homelessness, as well as substance abuse and mental health issues.

“Bringing humane and effective solutions to the complex and growing problem of individuals experiencing homelessness in San Diego County requires a shared strategic plan that creates a sea change,” said San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan.
