Dr Chamari Jayawardena admits she did not take her own professional advice when dealing with her cancer, but a novel treatment has given her a second chance to continue visiting the orphanages she supports in her native Sri Lanka.
Instead, after some initial standard chemotherapy to shrink the tumour, she was referred to Professor Lewis Perrin, Director of Gynaecological Oncology at Brisbane’s Mater Hospital. In Jayawardena’s case the treatment proved to be a success, with doctors declaring her “in complete remission”.As a result, in December 2022, she was able to return to the orphanage to say “hi” instead of “bye”.
