California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Tuesday that will ban vehicles from parking near crosswalks, a measure that aims to make roadways safer for pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers. Assembly Bill 413 is designed to prohibit drivers from parking “within 20 feet of the vehicle approach side of any unmarked or marked crosswalk.” The bill also bans parking 15 feet from a crosswalk with a curb extension.
A legislative analysis of Lee’s bill cited federal statistics that say 10,626 of the 38,824 traffic fatalities in the U.S. in 2020 happened at intersections, and 1,674 of those deaths were pedestrians, almost 25% of all pedestrian deaths that year. Last month, an 80-year-old San Francisco man died after being hit by a vehicle while crossing Valencia Street from 18th Street, just weeks after a 4-year-old girl was killed while crossing an intersection at 4th and King streets.
