Texas banking officials are launching a safety campaign related to the criminal tactics.
New Braunfels Police warn of"jugging" robberies targeting people withdrawing cash from banks and ATMs.The New Braunfels Police Department is warning residents about a recent string of targeted thefts known as “bank juggings” — a crime that state bankers associations say is increasing statewide.
Jugging refers to thieves targeting people who have withdrawn money from an ATM, bank or credit union. The robbers typically follow those people and attempt to rob them, in some cases by breaking into their unattended vehicles or even their homes. This week, New Braunfels police arrested two men who they accuse of breaking into the vehicle of a man they saw withdraw money from a bank. Police say the suspects broke into the man’s Toyota Rav-4 while he was inside a gas station.
Julian Hayward Fite, 31, and Marshawn Devonte Gillis, 31, were arrested and face charges of theft of property greater than $2,500 and less than $30,000, vehicle burglary, unlawful use of a criminal instrument and accident involving damage to a vehicle greater than $200.“The New Braunfels Police Department would like to remind all residents to never leave cash in your vehicle,” the department said in a Facebook post.
