Relegated to the second tier last season, they are on track to be promoted straight back up from the English Championship - but they’ve also been charged for breaking the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules during their last three years in the top division, which could lead to a points deduction that would jeopardise their return and imperil the club’s short-term future.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen are on the cusp of something truly special. They’ve always been there or thereabouts, but with seven games left this season, they sit just one win away from clinching their long-awaited first Bundesliga crown and ending Bayern Munich’s run of 11 titles in a row. “The fans were just dying for success, some silverware ... we felt the pressure,” said Kruse, who played alongside the club’s current managing director of sport, Simon Rolfes, and remains in touch with him.
But their philosophy is not to simply spend big on the transfer market, although they often do.
