Luffy’s scar from the anime is finally explained.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Netflix's One Piece makes some changes to the original anime, with one of these alterations explaining a controversial Luffy moment 26 years after it was first shown. While the Netflix adaptation of One Piece is being widely praised by critics and longtime fans alike for its fidelity to the source material, some changes have naturally been made in the transition from anime to Western live-action TV.
The story changes made to the live-action One Piece have proven to be well-thought-out with most making sense for the story or simply setting up future character relationships and moments earlier than the anime did. However, some changes were also made to provide confusing or controversial moments from the anime or manga with more context.
In Netflix's One Piece though, this moment is changed somewhat. Earlier in the episode in which Luffy gives himself a facial scar, Shanks makes a passing comment that his own scars prove his piracy experience. Luffy takes this comment literally and proceeds to give himself a scar much like Shanks'. Based on Shanks' comments about scars proving pirate experience, Netflix's One Piece provides more context to why Luffy scars his own face.
One Piece's "Scar" Line Foreshadows A Major Upcoming Battle In the original One Piece story, Luffy has two scars. One of these is the one on his face while the other is a severe burn in the shape of an "X" on his chest. The latter was foreshadowed in Netflix's One Piece by Shanks' reaction to Luffy's face scar. Shanks states that Luffy stabbing himself does not prove anything, as it was not a scar he earned.
However, when Netflix's One Piece eventually portrays the climactic Battle of Marineford arc, Luffy will receive the chest scar that is earned by the tragic death of someone Luffy cares deeply about. This was set up by Shanks early in the live-action One Piece, with Luffy's first scar being unearned before his later scar is the opposite.
