You would think with a reaction like that, Netflix would’ve logged significant year-over-year growth or something. After two consecutive quarters of subscriber losses, Wall Street cheered as Netflix added 2.4 million subscribers — but growth is still decelerating. In Q3 2021, Netflix subscribers grew 9.4% year-over-year, then slowed to 8.9% growth in Q4, 6.7% in Q1 2022, 5.5% in Q2 and 4.5% last quarter.
For all intents and purposes, it’s great that a mature company like Netflix was able to add subscribers during the quarter, especially in its most penetrated market, the U.S. and Canada. But that will only silence the bears temporarily. There’s still much more that Netflix needs to prove before we declare the company completely out of the woods. As much as subscriber growth is still considered the key metric for streaming, and as much influence as it does still have on share price, the fact of the matter is, the subscribers need to be more effectively monetized.
