Houston received a shipment of 6,740 monkeypox vaccines this week, Mayor Sylvester Turner said Wednesday, less than one week after the city abruptly paused and then quickly reinstated distribution amid strong demand.
Houston currently is reserving the shots for people who have been exposed to confirmed cases, and for people considered to be at higher risk of contracting the virus. They include: people who have been diagnosed with syphilis or gonorrhea in the last three months, people who take pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention, or who attended or worked at a commercial sex venue or other venues where they had sex with unknown or multiple partners.
Because doses remain limited, the health department “is unable to expand eligibility right now," its spokesperson Porfirio Villarreal said Wednesday. More than 6,300 Americans had tested positive for monkeypox as of Wednesday, nearly 500 of them in Texas, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is tracking cases nationwide. Many cases have been among gay and bisexual men, but the disease can be spread among anyone via close contact.surmises gay and bisexual men may have more “positive health seeking behavior” and are being diagnosed with monkeypox at sexual health clinics, leading to more known cases in the community.
