In all, 482 New Jersey bridges received a poor rating in 2021, according to data collected by the Federal Highway Administration.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, the answer is a resounding yes.

On the FHWA’s National Bridge Inventory for 2021, 482 Garden State bridges received a grade of “poor.” That’s the same rating as the bridge in Pittsburgh’s Frick Park that collapsed on Friday morning, injuring 10 people. States, federal agencies, and tribal governments submit data to the bridge inventory on an annual basis. In total, New Jersey had 6,798 bridges in last year’s report, meaning that about 7% received the poor grade.

About 27% of the state’s bridges were rated “good,” the highest rating, while the majority fell somewhere in between the two with a grade of “fair.”, when the state was at 502. State officials say the number of spans has been falling, thanks to increased spending in recent years on bridges. Each bridge receives ratings on its deck, superstructure, substructure, and culvert. The bridges are then graded according to their lowest rating, with a score of 7 or more being classified as good, while a 4 or less in any category earns that bridge a poor grade.
