The Spurs' first coach was Tom Nissalke, and the team would go 45-39 in their first year in the Alamo City, finishing third in the ABA's Western Division.
The Spurs lost that first game 121-106 to the San Diego Conquistadors, who would eventually become the San Diego Sails before folding in 1975. The Spurs held the lead 77-73 heading into the fourth quarter but were blown out in the final 12 minutes by a score of 48-29. Rich Jones and Joe Hamilton led the team in scoring in that game with 25 and 20 points respectively.Of the 11 matchups with the Conquistadors, or, as they were colloquially termed,"the Q's," that season, the Spurs would lose just three, including that first game. Of the other two losses, one came in overtime.
The Spurs would go on to the playoffs that season but lost in seven games to fellow future NBA team the Indiana Pacers. Four teams, the New York Nets, Pacers, Spurs and Denver Nuggets came out of the ABA following the merger between the leagues in 1976.
