Jim Spitser began attending event when UCLA was in its heyday and event was simply known as NCAA men's basketball tournament
Sitting at center court high above the floor at Viejas Arena, Jim Spitser stuck out among the crowd for Sunday’s NCAA Tournament games.
That started an unprecedented streak of 10 titles in 12 years under legendary UCLA coach John Wooden. “I think Alcindor had a scratched retina or something from the pervious game, didn’t do well and they lost,” Spitser said. “Then as it turned out, that Final Four was in the old Sports Arena in L.A. and they blew Houston away. That’s the best single game I’ve ever seen.”
Spitser was hoping to watch his Bruins in person this season at Viejas Arena, but UCLA was dispatched to the regional in Portland, Ore.As a UCLA season-ticket holder since 1965, the year Pauley Pavilion opened, Spitser’s ticket priority is higher than just about everyone. The Fighting Irish players wore T-shirts that read “Pray for Peace” on the front with the blue and yellow Ukrainian flag.Asked what was said in Texas Tech’s heated huddle at that point, Red Raiders forward Kevin Obanor said: “Are you trying to go home? No way to sugarcoat it. Are you trying to go home?”
