The Navy says a photo posted on social media Thursday likely gave some people the wrong impression that the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer suffered a serious mechanical problem after sailing out of San Diego Bay.

The image placed on X shows a long plume of dark smoke flowing down the ship’s flight deck. The post including the message, “USS Boxer Wasp-class amphibious assault shipoff of San Diego reporting on radio an ‘engineering casualty’ - August 17, 2022 #ussboxer #lhd4.’“USS Box is a steam-powered ship,” said Commader Arlo Abrahamson, a spokes for Naval Surface Force-Pacific Fleet.

“The boilers burn fuel which can temporarily create black smoke, including when the ship conducts testing of its systems underway. There is no current impact to the mission and Boxer continues sea trials.” The Navy has fielded a lot of media inquiries about Boxer recently because the ship remained in port despite having completed a $200 million overhaul in San Diego, where it is homeported.
