An F-35 in Texas crashed at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth on Thursday, with the pilot successfully ejecting from the aircraft.
"The call was that a military aircraft had crashed on the base, it’s on their perimeter side of the fence, and that the pilot had ejected," Cook said.
Despite the crash taking place on federal land, local law enforcement was called to control traffic on roads nearby, as many people were stopping to see what was happening on the base."We are aware of the F-35B crash on the shared runway at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth and understand that the pilot ejected successfully," Lockheed Martin said in a statement."Safety is our priority, and we will follow appropriate investigation protocol.
According to Lockheed, the F-35 program has an"exceptional safety record," for such a complex, global aircraft that spans 16 nations and three U.S. military services. To date, the F-35 fleet has flown more than 602,000 cumulative flight hours and more than 880 F-35s have been delivered by Lockheed Martin.Get all the stories you need-to-know from the most powerful name in news delivered first thing every morning to your inbox
