One million animal and plant species are at imminent risk of extinction due to humankind's relentless pursuit of economic growth, scientists said on May 6 in a landmark report on the impact of modern civilization on the natural world.
The findings of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, which is comprised of more than 130 countries, included accelerating rates of species loss, increasing changes in land use, worsening degradation of agricultural productivity, and overfishing. “We are eroding the very foundations of our economies, livelihoods, food security, health and quality of life worldwide,” said IPBES Chair Robert Watson.
