World leaders including from the U.S. and the U.N. called on Sudan’s rival armed forces to commit to a cease-fire for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr ending Ramadan on Friday after fighting that has rocked the country and killed at least 400 people.

Street battles have prevented ambulances from retrieving dead bodies and medics from delivering aid. Many residents have had to shelter at home with

dwindling food supplies and power cuts, or to attempt to find a way out under the fire through checkpoints and tanks. In the war-ravaged western region of Darfur, between 10,000 and 20,000 people are estimated to have fled to neighboring Chad already.U.N. Secretary General António Guterres also appealed for a cease-fire to allow civilians to reach safety, and the World Health Organization called for a pause to deliver medical supplies. The violence has forced most of the major hospitals in the capital to shut because they came under attack or could not resupply.

Japan’s defense minister on Thursday also ordered military aircraft sent to Djibouti to stand by for an evacuation of around 60 nationals from Sudan, while the Netherlands sent aircraft to Jordan, according to the Associated Press.
