MIAMI VALLEY, Ohio – Despite only making up 5% of drivers in Ohio, teenage drivers are involved with more than 15% of the total crashes, averaging more than 2000 crashes every year.
“I think a lot of teens feel that way,” says Matt Bruning, Press Secretary for the Ohio Department of Transportation. “They think, ‘I don’t need to worry about watching my speed, I don’t need to worry about putting that phone distraction down, I can do it with no problems.’ The reality is that you can’t.”For National Teenage Driver Safety Week, state and local organizations are emphasizing that traffic laws, and traffic law enforcers, are put in place to keep you safe while on the road.
Purpura says, “Some things that we see a lot in our teen drivers are following too closely, failure to yield in intersections, speeding, things that are really within their control.”In the first year or two behind the wheel, they will drive under special restrictions, in order to ease them into the responsibility of operating a motor vehicle.
Both state and local officials understand that proper driver’s education is critical at the foundational level.
