The Dubliner has faced serious adversity in his career and personal life, but returns to Dublin this evening riding the crest of a wave.
Dubliner Nathan Kelly however, is not like most fighters.
"I dusted myself off eventually fought again and lost my second one by split decision and that one, although it had me distraught, it almost lit a fire inside me as well. The first month after, I was in the slumps of despair and was like ‘what am I doing wrong here?’ The Dubliner found himself at rock bottom after those two defeats. Kelly has always expected a lot from himself both in his personal and professional life. Substance abuse was common in his area, and at his lowest point, he succumbed to temptation after years of vowing he wouldn't be swayed.
"I was going to fix everything, I was going to shine the light for all my other family members and kids in the area. In doing that, I put myself under a lot of pressure and over time I started dabbling with drugs myself and really got myself into a hole." "Stay away from drugs obviously, think for yourself, but ultimately just believe in yourself. I think there’s a lot of young people around here that don’t have a positive male adult influence on their lives to tell them to better themselves. If I can be the one to say I’ve been there, I’ve done that, listen to what I’m saying, put yourself into something positive and be around positive people, surround yourself with people that bring you up and not drag you down.
