NASA will leave its moon rocket on the launch pad to weather Tropical Storm Nicole.
, Nicole was expected to come ashore Wednesday night along Florida's east coast as a hurricane. Maximum sustained winds are forecast to be 75 mph, making it a Category 1 hurricane.
"Based on expected weather conditions and options to roll back ahead of the storm, the agency determined Sunday evening the safest option for the launch hardware was to keep the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft secured at the pad,"This is the second storm to delay the launch of NASA's moon rocket. In September, NASA rolled its rocket back into the Vehicle Assembly Building before Hurricane Ian made landfall as a Category 4 storm.
Next week's mission, dubbed Artemis I, will be the first time that NASA's Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft lift off together. The uncrewed spacecraft will circle the moon before landing in the Pacific Ocean on Dec. 11. Artemis I would be followed by a crewed mission around the moon and then a mission to land the first woman and person of color on the moon , potentially in 2025.
