Friday’s spacewalk will now feature a male-female pair because the International Space Station doesn’t have a second medium-size spacesuit.
Two women astronauts were scheduled to perform the first-ever all-female spacewalk outside of the International Space Station on Friday, but NASA has aborted the milestone mission for want of “spacesuit availability.”
Dean added that McClain had trained in both medium and large torso suit sizes, but found the medium was a better fit for her in space. Indeed, McClain noted on Twitter earlier this month that she has grown 2 inches since arriving at the ISS in December.And this suit is a matter of life and death, as Earth’s orbit can plummet as cold as minus 250 degrees Fahrenheight — or as blistering as 250 degrees Fahrenheit in full view of the sun, NASA reports.
Still, many space fans who were looking forward to seeing two women break one of the highest glass ceilings expressed their disappointment on Twitter.
