Interview reveals decisions behind Neiji's death
Neji Hyuga's death during Naruto's Fourth Shinobi World War was a shock to longtime readers, but his departure also became contentious after series creator Masashi Kishimoto gave an interview to explain his reasoning. In it, he revealed his reasons for writing the death of the fan favorite. Unfortunately, the explanation he offered didn't prove satisfactory and only made Neji's death appear arbitrary.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The storyline in question saw the character, who began the manga resenting his cousin Hinata, sacrifice himself to protect her against the villainous Pain. The whole sequence, while tragic, also felt dramatic in all the wrong ways, propelled more by emotion rather than logical action.
In practice, though, the decision does feel like the sacrifice of a beloved - and very powerful character - to propel a romantic side plot, which is why Kishimoto's explanation about Neji can be frustrating to hear. The choreography of the scene itself is also cliché, with the use of the old "taking the bullet".
Naruto and Hinata's romance isn't bad, per se, and it has enough supporters who either like Hinata herself or the romantic pairing. It helps that it was the subject of a whole theatrical film: The Last: Naruto the Movie. Unfortunately, to have such a big spectacle of Naruto literally fighting for his love only makes Neji's death even more unnecessary, retroactively, if the franchise was going to dedicate a whole film to this sub-plot.
