Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's appeal regarding a claimed royal addendum allowing him to serve his remaining prison sentence under house arrest commenced at the Court of Appeal.

The Court of Appeal today began proceedings on Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's appeal regarding his claim of a royal addendum, starting with the hearing of the defense's application to introduce new evidence. A three-judge panel consisting of Justices Datuk Azizah Nawawi, Datuk Azhahari Kamal Ramli, and Datuk Seri Mohd Firuz Jaffril listened to submissions from Najib's lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.

The former prime minister sought to present additional evidence to support his assertion of such an addendum, allegedly permitting him to finish his prison sentence under house arrest. Following the arguments, the panel proceeded to hear Najib's appeal against the High Court's July 3, 2024, ruling that dismissed his request for leave to initiate a judicial review of the purported addendum issued by the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong. High Court Judge Datuk Amarjeet Singh determined that the four affidavits supporting Najib's claim, including from UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and vice-president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, were hearsay and inadmissible. Najib, 71, is requesting a mandamus order to compel the respondents to react and verify the existence of the alleged additional decree dated January 29, 2024. The respondents include the Malaysian Government, the Home Minister, the Commissioner-General of Prisons, the Attorney-General, the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya, the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (JPM) (Law and Institutional Reform), and the Director-General of Legal Affairs Division at JPM. The former Pekan member of parliament also seeks an order that, if the additional decree is confirmed, the respondents must enforce it and enable his immediate transfer from Kajang Prison to his residence in Kuala Lumpur to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest
