Datuk Seri Najib Razak, during his cross-examination at the 1MDB trial, asserted that the 1MDB special task force established in 2015 was an illegitimate body. He argued that its formation lacked proper regulations and authorization from the Attorney General, making it inherently illegal.

PUTRAJAYA: The 1Malaysia Development Bhd special task force that was set up in 2015 to investigate the company's misconduct was essentially an illegitimate body, the High Court told.

He was asked by Deputy Public Prosecutor Kamal Baharin Omar about former Attorney General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail and former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed, who were both removed from their positions in 2015 and 2016, respectively.I put it to you, the investigation was the reason they both were replaced. When these two important figures were removed, there was a roadblock to the special task force.I disagree.

"If the Attorney General was to set up a task force today, it would still be illegal. There is no law nor provisions for it," he said.

During the RM2.28 billion 1MDB trial, Najib claimed that it was 'ridiculous' to think China could have solved 1MDB's problems and such a move would have faced international condemnation. He stated that Amhari's trip was for reconnaissance regarding potential infrastructure projects with China, not to seek financial assistance. The prosecution questioned Najib about Amhari's subsequent trip to Abu Dhabi, where he met with Mubadala Investment Co CEO Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak to resolve 1MDB's disputes with International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC). Najib insisted that Amhari was representing him, not 1MDB, in these matters.
