Sunday marks the start of a heatwave that’s expected to last through most of the week, with high humidity and temperatures possibly reaching the upper 90s by Wednesday,Early clouds on Sunday will make way for sunny skies as the mercury rises to the low 90s for much of the state. Those at the Jersey Shore will find temperatures about 10 degrees cooler, but swimmers need to stay vigilant as dangerous rip currents remain a threat through Monday evening, the National Weather Service said.
Swimmers are warned to remain near a lifeguard and to remember this rule: If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current, the NWS advised. If you are able, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline and, if you can’t, face the shore and call or wave for help. The National Weather Service says strong rip currents can be deadly, and swimmers should follow these safety tips.Back on land, the forecast remains rain-free and sunny for the next several days. Wednesday’s high could reach 98 degrees, according to Accuweather. The first sign of heat relief is expected Friday, with temperatures hitting the high 80s and a 40% chance of rain.
