The new rules come after the CDC changed its recommendations for schools.

or are exposed to someone who has the virus under eagerly-awaited new school health guidelines released by the state Wednesday.— which align with updated federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines released last week — limit quarantines to when COVID is believed to be most infectious, state health department officials said.Students and school staff who test positive for COVID should quarantine at home for five days after they experience symptoms or receive a positive test.

Students and school staff do not generally need to wear masks outdoors, including during outdoor physical education classes or school sports. But students exposed to COVID should wear a mask outdoors at school during days six through 10 after completing their five-day quarantines at home. Most of New Jersey’s nearly 600 school districts have been following the state’s health guidelines. However, the new recommendations are not mandatory. School districts are still free to make their own rules for longer or shorter quarantines.

“We know that students benefit from in-person learning, and safely continuing in-person instruction remains a priority,” said state Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli. “These recommendations will help local health departments and schools in handling COVID-19 cases and exposures among students and staff to ensure healthy outcomes for all.”
