It would require paying domestic workers minimum wage and give them other protections.

New Jersey lawmakers advanced legislation Thursday that would give tens of thousands of domestic workers in the state the same protections as other employees.

“They’re without rights,” said state Sen. Richard Codey, D-Essex, the bill’s primary sponsor“In the food chain, they’re at the bottom. It’s about time. Overwhelmingly are they treated with love and respect, but there are a bunch who are not treated that way.” “Domestic workers are essential in supporting a third of families in New Jersey,” Codey said. “However, they earn some of the lowest wages of all occupations and are often victims to poor working conditions, wage theft, lack of formal contracts, and unpredictable work schedules.”“Our members voted against the bill because of the significant concerns expressed by the business community,” Brad Schnure, a spokesman for the Senate Republicans, said.
