The state Senate passed a bill this past week that would drop the requirement for three years.

Christie and the law’s supporters said workers with a salary funded by New Jersey taxpayers should live and pay taxes here, too. You can be exempted only if you get a waiver for financial, health, or other reasons.

The proposal would require districts to make a “good faith” effort to hire New Jersey residents first.
