A probable case of monkeypox is under investigation in New Jersey.

. Its symptoms, while similar, are less severe than smallpox. They include: fever, chills, headache, muscle and back aches, swollen lymph nodes, as well as the distinct pimply or blistery rash, which can appear on the face, mouth and body, according to the CDC.

“As a precaution, any New Jersey residents who experience flu-like illness with swelling of lymph nodes and rash occurring on the face and body should contact their healthcare provider,” the state’s statement said.Cases were detected in the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal. It’s unclear how the source of the exposures, but the CDC says, “early data suggest that gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men make up a high number of cases.
