Zamudio’s not wrong. In northwest New Jersey, where she lives, 18 towns are childcare deserts — places where daycare centers don’t have any open spots for infants or toddlers. According to data collected by nonprofitClearly, accessibility here is a problem. And affordability, another. Zamudio had both. And an additional one: Her family made too much money., a nonprofit social service group in the area, and was denied.

“The worrying,” Rojo says, “was non-stop.” Like Zamudio, she applied to a childcare subsidy program and was denied.
