A long-lost masterpiece by Australian painter Brett Whiteley which languished in a Dallas art museum for decades has gone under the hammer.

The Sydney-born artist is widely considered one of the greatest Australian painters of all time, but the painting’s custodians in Dallas decided to sell the piece due to his low profile in the United States.

The museum never formally incorporated the piece into their permanent collection and unsuccessfully attempted to find the mysterious donors before putting it up for auction. Brett Whiteley is often regarded as the greatest Australian painter of all time. Picture: Tony Evans/Getty Images. Brett Whiteley died at 53-years-old in 1992 after a heart attack and in the years since his death, his paintings have broken several records at auction in Australia and Europe.
