PETALING JAYA: Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today slammed the sale of MyKads and Malaysian birth certificates to foreigners as an act of treachery, after police nabbed syndicate members including a National Registration Department assistant director.
“The home ministry will not compromise with anyone involved directly in this matter and their accomplices,” he said in a statement today. Muhyiddin also said he has instructed the NRD director-general, Ruslin Jusoh to cooperate fully with the investigating authorities, including the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
Penang police have detained 20 involved in the syndicate. Six people, including NRD assistant director Mohd Faizul Arifin, were slapped with 32 charges for falsifying Malaysian birth certificates and MyKad and for selling the documents to foreigners. Muhyiddin urged the public to use existing procedures when applying for identification documents. “Don’t obtain them illegally,” he said. He encouraged the public to contact the police if they have any information on syndicates.
