Myanmar’s military junta has extended the state of emergency by six months, further delaying promised elections and solidifying its grip on power amid a devastating civil war. The extension, approved by the junta’s ruling council, will keep the country under martial law until at least January 2025.

Myanmar 's military junta extended the state of emergency by six months on Friday, marking four years since the coup that plunged the country into a brutal civil war. The ruling council, headed by army chief Min Aung Hlaing, unanimously approved the extension, according to a statement released by the junta's information team.

The statement emphasized that “all members of National Defence and Security Council including the commander in chief as well as acting president decided in unison for the extension of the state of emergency for another six months.”This extension effectively postpones the junta's long-promised elections, initially slated for 2025. General Min Aung Hlaing asserted that “peace and stability is still needed” before the state of emergency can be lifted and elections held. However, critics and Western governments have consistently condemned any elections conducted under the junta's control, deeming them neither free nor fair. The military seized power in February 2021, alleging widespread fraud in the previous year's elections, which were convincingly won by Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD). Since then, the junta has faced fierce resistance from both established ethnic minority armed groups and newer pro-democracy “People’s Defence Forces”. The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) reports that over 6,000 civilians have been killed and more than 20,000 arrested in the aftermath of the coup. The UN’s Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) recently stated that serious international crimes have been committed in the four years since the coup. The conflict has displaced over 3.5 million people from their homes, and a staggering 19.9 million people – more than a third of Myanmar’s population – are projected to require humanitarian aid in 2025
