I am a divorced dad of two high-functioning autistic boys. The kids split their time 60/40 with a majority of the time at their mother’s house. She is currently on disability for a range of issues and does not work outside the home. Since our divorce, we have each found new partners, and while I don’t appreciate a lot about her current guy , he also has a kiddo who is most likely on the spectrum and who has been decent to the kids.
I don’t have firearms in my house at all, while he is a gun nut and is a self-professed “responsible gun owner.” On Christmas, the boys went with their mom to Bob’s house for the day, and toward the end of the evening, were playing hide and seek. Bob’s son was hiding, and my older son found him in Bob’s bedroom.
She was obviously distraught and started screaming at him while he burst into tears immediately because of course he did—he just fired a gun that he wasn’t expecting to be loaded. She screamed that he could have killed her and to get his sh*t together and stop crying. My son told me he didn’t sleep at all when they got back to his mom’s house because she had a panic attack, and he could hear her crying all night.
I talked to him about it when I got them for our Christmas together yesterday, and he said he felt guilty “because he almost killed mom.” I’m FURIOUS right now. There are obviously several problems here, but the most pressing issue for me is this: He is afraid of losing contact with his mom . I don’t want to pile any further guilt on his shoulders.
