Elon Musk said Friday that the ability to block users would be removed from X, formerly known as Twitter.
The block feature allows users to stop others from accessing or interacting with a user's account and is a common tool for stopping harassment. Instead, Musk proposes using the"mute" feature, which merely removes the muted account's posts from one's timeline."Block is going to be deleted as a 'feature,' except for DMs," Musk tweeted."It makes no sense.
Musk immediately received pushback on social media."The block feature is the best feature on this site," Federalist Editor-in-Chief Mollie Hemingway responded. "What?! Awful idea," conservative commentator Allie Beth Stuckey tweeted."I already have DMs closed to people I don't follow. We should absolutely be able to block someone from seeing our content or interacting with us at all. If someone is constantly harassing you/your followers, that ruins the whole experience & makes using the app at all less likely.
Musk's vision is to turn X into an"everything app" that can compete with the likes of PayPal and other social websites such as Facebook and Instagram. He appointed former NBCUniversal executive Linda Yaccarino as the CEO in May to assist in helping the company seek to improve its finances.
