Rutledge Pearson was an educator, civil rights leader and human rights activist. He also was a Negro league baseball player in his early years. In 1961, he was elected President of the Jacksonville Branch of the NAACP. He was later elected President of the Florida State Conference of the NAACP. As a president, he supported the civil rights efforts in nearby St. Augustine that led to the passage of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Rodney L. Hurst is a civil rights activist, a Black historian, an NAACP Life Member, an author, and a United States Air Force veteran. He is the award-winning author of three books,A personal account of the 1960 sit-in demonstrations in Jacksonville, Florida, and Ax Handle Saturday;Never Forget Who You Are: Conversations about Racism and Identity Development,The new Springfield Dreamette location has added four murals to its building.
