Manjola Cuni, 47, faced a possible 12-month jail sentence and had already spent two months in custody

An Italian citizen who claimed she helped bring a pregnant Albanian woman to Ireland to save her life has been cleared of people smuggling after a judge held she acted on "humanitarian" grounds.

Gardai questioned Cuni and found the missing woman's real Albanian passport and documents in her luggage. Her phone also showed they had been messaging each other. Ms Cuni claimed that she had met the single woman a couple of times and had been told she wanted to come to Ireland because she was pregnant. "I was helping as she is from a village in the mountains, and she will be killed," Ms Cuni claimed.

She contended she was confused when the pregnant woman did not go to the non-EU channel and was unaware that her passport was in Ms Cuni's baggage. GNIB detective Karen Barker accepted that she did not believe Ms Cuni did it for financial gain and was "not a criminal mastermind".

Ireland make one change for Six Nations clash with EnglandIreland make one change for Six Nations clash with EnglandAndy Farrell’s side could wrap up the Six Nations championship with a bonus point victory over England in London. Today’s early game is quite high scoring classic. Louis Lynagh has just scored to narrow the gap to 21-22 in favour of the Scots over Italy. England’s pack looks stacked with lineout threats, including Itoje, and bearing in mind the five scrum penalties the Irish pack conceded two years ago, they will surely go after Ireland’s set pieces. It could also be the biggest test yet of Jack Crowley’s decision-making under the duress which Felix Jones’s blitz defence will try to impose. As for Ireland, they make one change to the side that beat Italy. Hugo Keenan is fit again and starts at fullback ahead of Ciarán Frawley, who drops to the bench. Among the replacements, Finlay Bealham beats out Oli Jager in the tighthead slot while Frawley is the lone outside back given the 6-2 split. As a result, Garry Ringrose misses out despite being fit again, as does Stuart McCloskey even with his impressive bench cameos of late.
