No matter where we are, home is where the heart is, after all.
Having been away in Singapore and unable to see her children in the last 12 months due to the pandemic, Deepa Krishnan has decided to quit her job as a bank officer and return to Penang. The 37-year-old’s homecoming is also timely as unlike last year, now she is able to celebrate Deepavali in person with them.
“I am back to my children and parents whom I have not met for over a year since I went back to Singapore in June last year. “My husband and I were stuck in the republic during the last Deepavali while my parents, children, sister and her son were all in Johor for the festival,” said Deepa when met at her parents’ home in Sungai Ara, Penang. The mother-of-two recalled the painful memories of not being able to be with her children then, who were just across the causeway, as she and her husband had to stay and work in Singapore during the lockdown. “Both my parents were in Johor taking care of our daughter, Aisshwarya, eight, and son Kehshervf, three, together with my sister who was working in Johor.” Deepa, who was working in a bank in Penang before taking up the job offer in Singapore, said the Covid-19 pandemic turned many lives upside down, including theirs. GOH/The Star “I took up the job in Singapore as the salary was very much higher and with the exchange rate, I was able to save part of my salary. “My husband, who is also from Penang, was working in a company and we were quite happy as we were staying in Johor and working in Singapore. “However, the pandemic turned our lives upside down and after much discussion, I decided to quit my job in Singapore. I came back to Penang in July to take care of my children and parents.“For the time being, I would like to play the role of a housewife, daughter and mother. “I also did not want to continuously pass on the burden of taking care of my children to my parents,” she said. Deepa, however, said her husband would not be able to join them in celebrating Deepavali this year due to work commitments. “Although I am happy to be reunited with my kids and parents, I will be celebrating this Deepavali with a heavy heart as my husband will not be able to join us.” Both of Deepa’s parents, Krishnan Vengadasalam, 67, and Selvi Ramachandram, 57, could not hide their tears in having Deepa and her sister back in Penang after more than a year. “We are very happy that both our daughters and their children are back to celebrate Deepavali in our hometown.“There is nothing like being back in our hometown to celebrate Deepavali, something we have been doing for a long time,” said Krishnan.
