BREAKING: Massive pileup reported amid a dust storm on Interstate 55 in Illinois. Here's what we know:
Several people are dead after a multi-car pileup among windy, dusty conditions on Interstate 55 in Illinois.
Illinois State Police Maj. Ryan Starrick told the Associated Press there are "multiple fatalities" and more than 30 people were transported to hospitals. An estimated 40 to 60 cars and several semitrailers were involved. The incident occurred on I-55 south of Springfield, where winds have gusted between 35 and 45 mph today. The interstate isStarrick said the interstate would be closed until at least tomorrow."I saw the smoke cloud from a distance and I've driven through them before, you know, you put your hazards on, go slow," Cormier told weather.com. "And I moved to the left lane to get away out from behind a semi. And that's when I came across everything else stopped in the road.
A reunion center for those involved and their families has been set up at City Hall in the town of Divernon., and what appeared to be crashes on both directions of the highway.
