The National Sports Council (MSN) addresses concerns regarding funding for climbing athletes participating in the 2025 SEA Games, clarifying selection criteria and financial support mechanisms.
PETALING JAYA: The National Sports Council ( MSN) has refuted claims that climbing athletes are not receiving support to participate in the 2025 SEA Games, clarifying that the selection of athletes is entirely determined by the Athlete Selection Committee of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (MOM). The selection meeting on August 12th established the terms for Category A and B athletes.
Category A athletes will have their expenses fully covered by the MOM and MSN, while athletes in Category B need to be financed by their respective sports associations, with reimbursement offered if they win a medal. MSN stated that all associations, including the Malaysian Climbing Federation (PMM), agreed to these financing terms and that climbing was placed in Category B because no athletes ranked within the top three in Southeast Asia. This response follows earlier concerns raised by national wall climbing athlete Mohd Izzat Shokor, who reported that preparations for the SEA Games in Thailand were at a critical stage due to financial constraints. The MSN further indicated that all associations that submitted Category B applications had already expressed their agreement and commitment to cover their athletes' participation costs. \Regarding climbing, the MSN explained that the sport’s placement in Category B was due to the absence of any athletes within the top three rankings in Southeast Asia. The PMM also agreed to the established financing conditions. MSN also announced that climbing has been identified for inclusion in the LA 2028 Special Program, subsequently approving a RM200,000 allocation to the PMM for training and tournament participation to improve the athletes' world rankings throughout this year. This allocation can also be utilized for athletes' preparation for the 2025 SEA Games, the MSN added. The financial framework and categorization are designed to balance support and responsibility, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently while also encouraging associations to actively invest in their athletes. This approach aims to foster a sustainable model for sports development in Malaysia, allowing various sports, including climbing, to participate in international competitions and enhance their performance.\The MSN's clarification underscores the importance of adhering to established selection criteria and financial guidelines, ensuring transparency and fairness in the allocation of resources. The Council's decision to provide financial support to climbing, even within the context of Category B, demonstrates its commitment to the development of all sports.
