British playwright Lucy Kirkwood's play premiered in London in 2016 and had a Tony-nominated Broadway run in 2017
Moxie Theatre’s executive artistic director Jennifer Eve Thorn is a big fan of Lucy Kirkwood, and after reading the British playwright’s acclaimed 2016 drama “The Children,” she wanted to produce its local premiere. But Thorn figured she’d have no chance getting the local production rights for the play — which was nominated for a Tony Award for Best New Play after its 2017 Broadway run — due to Moxie’s small size.
Because Moxie specializes in producing the work of women playwrights, Thorn said she liked how Kirkwood’s dialogue between the two women scientists is so elevated and insightful. She also appreciates that the play offers meaty roles for mature actors.“I’m really attracted to plays that explore anything scientific, especially women in science, and I loved these two women.
“I walked in blind knowing nothing and was blown away,” Strassburger said of Kirkwood. “The intelligence of the writing is bar none. That’s one of the things I love about her as a playwright. She doesn’t talk down to the audience. That doesn’t mean it’s inaccessible, but it’s an intelligent script.”
