A man driving an SUV survived after the vehicle was hit by an Amtrak train Monday morning in East Oakland.
OAKLAND — A driver survived after his vehicle was hit by an Amtrak train Monday morning in East Oakland, authorities said.
Authorities said around midday Monday that the man was in stable condition. They did not specify the nature of his injuries. The man was in an SUV on the railroad tracks in the area of High Street and Coliseum Way about 6:19 a.m. Monday when it was struck by an Amtrak Capitol Corridor train enroute to San Jose, according to investigators.
Authorities were trying to find out whether the vehicle had stalled on the tracks or was trying to drive across them when it was struck on the passenger side. The impact knocked the vehicle a short distance. Firefighters had to extricate the man from the mangled wreckage.The train was delayed for more than two hours while authorities investigated the collision.
