Police say the 35-year-old victim suffered “significant facial injuries” from the attack as protesters disrupted traffic on High Street near the Harold Stubbs Justice Center.
More than 15 cars with several occupants were part of the latest protest over the death of the 25-year-old Walker, who was shot and killed by police on June 27 after a brief car pursuit that turned into a foot chase. It’s estimated eight officers fired 90 times at Walker, who was hit 41 times.
Tuesday’s protest started at about 6:40 p.m. when more than 15 cars stopped in front of the justice center. Police say several people got out of the vehicles and blocked High Street for nearly 45 minutes, with several people walking up to the windows of the justice center and holding up signs. At about 8:30 p.m., the protesters returned to High Street, with police saying several “agitators” preventing uninvolved vehicles from driving through. The motorcyclist tells police he was traveling south on High Street when a group of protesters demanded he go in another direction.
The protesters reportedly caused disturbances in other parts of the city. Akron City Councilman Shammas Malik released a statement on Twitter saying people demonstrated outside the homes of several council members Tuesday night.
